JOB TITLE:                   Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

 REPORTS TO:             Registered Nurses (RNs), Medical Surgical Nurse or Emergency Room Manager, and/or Chief Nursing Officer

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

Renders nursing care in assigned area in terms of individualized patient needs, according to dependent and independent nursing functions and conformance with recognized nursing techniques, procedures, and established standards based on the scope of practical nursing under the direction/delegation of RNs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this job description include but are not limited to:

  1. Assists with preparation, implementation, and continuing evaluation of nursing care for patients of all ages, which involves all specialties.

  2. Provides patient education, identifies patient/family needs; and implements measures to meet those needs.

  3. Communicates effectively with all levels of people.

  4. Promotes safe and efficient patient care.

  5. Functions as a contributing team member.

  6. Promotes positive public relations to physicians, patients, visitors, other employees, and the community.

  7. Maintains competency and environment of care.

  8. Participates in performance improvement activities.

  9. Provides for patients’/significant others’ rights and safety; strives to manage situations in a manner to reduce risk while following legal and regulatory standards.

  10. Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (LPN Program).

  • Current LPN license, in good standing with the State licensing board

  • Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required. 

  • One year of experience in medical/surgical nursing preferred.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel often requiring exceptional courtesy and tact. 

  • Critical thinking and multitasking skills.

  • Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions independently.

  • Basic math and computer skills. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS /WORKING CONDITIONS:

Standing, kneeling/squatting, pushing/pulling wheelchairs, stretchers, clients, furniture, and equipment, reaching, carrying, and should be able to lift 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques.  Employees may be exposed to infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, and the potential for physical harm. Clients who are confused or combative may increase the likelihood for this potential. The event of a physical plant hazard could increase the risk as well.  Must be able to deal with the day-to-day routine stress caused by working with ill patients, anxious families, physicians, and other health care providers.  May be able to deal

with stress caused by emergency or critical situations when the need arises.  May be exposed to unpleasant odors at any time.
